I'm in search of an early plastic fast idle cam for a 67 GTO, 7033893. Some of the early cams had a notch cut in them that operated the cam via a pin in the choke actuator shaft. My question is, as long as a cam has the notch cut in it to allow for the pin, will it work even if it's not the correct number? What would be the difference, the number of steps on the cam. This is for a restoration that has to look 100% correct so I don't want to use a later set up.

Yes, there are apprx 35 different part numbers used for plastic cam (via Jon Hargrove at the Carb Shop).
There are several configurations, different number and size of the "steps", but they all function in the same manner if notched for the pin far as I know.
It is difficult, if not near impossible to find one that isn't cracked, but that doesn't seem to hurt function as long as they are intact.
I have about a dozen 1967 cores here that are "junk", I may have a few cams on them that are useable and decent shape......Cliff
