accelerator pump wing broke
« on: December 29, 2012, 09:53:29 PM »
The roll pin that holds the accelerator pump arm was pretty rusty and will tearing it down I broke the little wing that holds the arm onto the air horn.  I was thinking JB welding it back on might do the trick but I figured I would check in and see if there is a better option.  I'm sure I'm not the first to break that little wing.  Any ideas?  Thanks!

that's a tough call. that has never happened to me but maybe I would use marine tex or Devcon (for metal).
I just have not had much luck with JB Weld. I wish there were a way to braze or solder the castings but I have not tried that either. (need to try some experimenting). There.s some other stuff to that has ground up metal in it I saw at the auto-body supplier but I cant remember the name of it.

I use Devcon steel putty for bedding rifle actions. I wonder if it would work. It can be picked up at Grainger.

Couple of fixes there.  If we still have the part, it can be re-attached by drilling up thru the airhorn and tapping it for tiny screws.  This fix is difficult, but effective.

An easier fix is to tap the thicker part for 6-32 thread, just a couple of turns, and install a 6-32" screw to hold the arm.  The hole in the arm will need to be larger for the 6-32 screw.  Tap the casting just deep enough so the screw gets tight just as it secures the arm flush, and retain it with loctite.  The arm will pivot on the screw like it did on the roll pin.....Cliff

Awesome, that's some seriously creative thinking.  I think I'll go the screw route first.  I wasn't keen on the idea of gluing the arm back on only to have it break off under again the force of the linkage.  I'll let you know how it goes.

Forgot to add with repair #2, it is best to instal a pump link what takes a clip so the pivot screw can remain in place when the carb is taken apart.  We stock them new.....Cliff
