I'm trying to replace the air valve torsion spring.....I took out the "set" screw, but the arbor that the spring fits over won't come out to install the new spring. Suggestions??

I use a very thin screwdriver (think jeweler's screwdriver) to pry it out. You may also try rotating it from the slotted side while pointing the "arbor" towards something to catch it in as it falls out.
Once you get it out a little bit it should come out pretty well. Does it move easily? If not, you may need to clean it up a bit with carb cleaner to break any gunk free.

I'm guessing this thing hadn't been changed since new in 1970. I ended up grinding a jewelers screwdriver to a TINY tip to get into the spring slot. Pried & turned, pried & turned.....it finally came out....Thanks for your help!

i found the easiest way to get a tite on out is just grab a plier and rip the spring out (your changing it anyway) then take a needle nose plier reach in and pry it out. fwiw

I ripped the old spring out, no hassle.....but the needle-nose deal wouldn't work for me. The pliers began to gouge on the arbor so bad that I went to the "jewelers screwdriver-turned pry bar" method......Thanks for your suggestion though!

They can be difficult to remove. The best method is to free them up and apply penetrating oil, then pry on the spring with a very tiny flat blade screwdriver where it goes thru the slot, they usually come out pretty easily.....Cliff
