Q-jet smells of gas

Hello,
I have a 1968 GTO with a 4 speed trany. Before and after Cliff rebuilt my carb there is a strong smell of gas when the engine is turned off. It is coming from the air cleaner air intake snout. There are no fuel leaks externally. The smell starts soon after the engine is turned off and will last about 2 days. The car starts up fine when it is hot and when it sits for a few days, no flooding. Cliff repaired the fuel bowl plugs and replaced the floats in the rebuild. If I stuff a rag in the air cleaner snout when I shut the engine off it cuts the stink a lot, but, when the rag is removed the stink comes back.
I had hoped the rebuild would solve this problem but it has not. This is NOT a slam of Cliff's work. The engine runs like it is fuel injected. No more stumble when I mash on the gas, idles smooth as glass. I could not be happier with the performance of the carb.
Any ideas would be appreciated.

 Sounds like maybe the float level is too high. Verify what the float level is.

Compared to my fuel injected cars, every carbureted car I've owned has smelled like gas once I park it, especially in a closed garage.

 Come to think of it, sounds like it is the vent on the top. Mine stinks as well. I think most are like that in a closed area.

Thanks to Obama and the "green team" this new fuel has a very low point of vaporization.  In any open system, it will evaporate into the atmosphere very quickly.  This problem is even worse on hot shut-downs as this quickly raises the temperature of the fuel in the bowl, even high enough to boil some off in certain applications.  That may be what you are seeing here.  Engine and underhood heat can also raise the pressure in the fuel line if there is no return, and push some fuel past the needle/seat assembly on hot shut downs/heat soak.  I've seen this happen more in the last couple of years than every before.

We are also getting a LOT of customer complaints about new production fuel pumps, having WAY too much pressure, which spikes even higher after hot shut-downs.  Seems like 10 to 12 PSI is more the norm with many fuel pumps than the 5-6 psi there are supposed to put out.  I suspect most of this production is "off-shore"......Cliff

I have filled my car with shell V-Power 91 octane the last two times I gassed up and the smell is GONE. The pump says it is 10% ethanol and is nitrogen enriched. When the smell was present I was gassing up at the local Giant station also using premium fuel. No one at either station has an explanation. Can anyone on this forum shed any light on the situation?

mooseman i don't know where you live but we have real gas here in wyoming. 100 percent pure gas and it cost today.3.65 thats all i run in my carbed vehicles . and there is very little smell when you shut them off.i don't care to purchase something that evaporates faster then i can fill the car.fwiw
