Quadrajet plug kit
« on: January 09, 2014, 03:33:44 PM »
Cliff,
The plug kit I ordered from You arrived today, so in a few days I will be pulling the carb off to install them, in an earlier post I asked of any tuning/adjusting I could do to get better control of the idle with the A/F screws, and any other adjustments or checks while its apart. The carb number is 17057266, I rebuilt it using the lighter side of recipe #3 of Your book. The engine is a 1974 Pontiac 455 bored 30 over, with an XE284 cam, #13 factory iron heads, with 9.5:1 compression, TH-400 tranny. The engine idles OK with about 8 inches of vacuum, from a stop when You depress the throttle it has a slight hesitation, but then takes right off, and when You give it a lot of throttle the car pulls hard so I think theres a little room for some fine tuning. The engine doesn't run like its fuel injected, but I would sure like it to. Thanks,

Paul

Frank,

I had the pistons dished after verifying the heads are a true 72c.c. to bring the compression down to 9.5. the 455 was originally built to seriously race, it had 12.75/1 compression, different cam, same heads, different intake ect. then life changes caused me to pull the engine apart, dish the pistons and now its going to be mainly a street car, who knows, maybe someday I would like to put a roller cam in it, we will see. Ive always wanted to put a super charger on the 455, but I think a turbo would be better. We don't have a race track nearby, so the money spent on a turbo and F/I, would make for a nice paint job.

Excellent carb for what you are doing.  How did you set it up?  Did you install one of our rebuild kits?  Tuning parts?....Cliff
