What modifications are needed for my Q-jet
« on: January 03, 2015, 10:35:58 AM »
What modifications do I need for my stage 1 carb for my 464 engine. There is nothing wrong with the carb but from what I have been reading they can be setup to run better with engine modifications and larger cam. My engine is still out of the car since it is in the paint shop so I was thinking it might be a good time to get the carb done. That way I do not have to leave the car set once I get it back together. A little engine info below.

Thanks for any help

Nelson

Just my .02 but if you have a known good carb and distributor I wouldn't touch either one until the engine is started and run for a while, at least until the cam is broke in. THEN do you carb and dist mods, preferably one at a time. If something is amiss after that, you can much more easily pinpoint the problem rather than cranking the engine excessively without starting and possibly flattening a cam lobe.

If I were building your carb here, I would install one of our kits, APT screw in the baseplate, different jet/rod combo, open up the idle tubes and DCR's, lighter PP spring and fine tune it on the engine once placed in service.  It's not going to need much help beyond that as they were more generous than the std 455 carburetors the same year....Cliff
