Weather change effects carb
« on: November 15, 2015, 08:13:18 PM »
Hi all,

It seems that changes in the temperature cause big problems with the way my carb functions.  If the weather is warm (high 70's and up) and the car is started it runs rather well with only a slight miss that can be heard at the exhaust pipe.  If the weather is cool (mid to low 70's, 60's) the car blows very dark smoke and has a miss that rattles the whole engine and leaks gas from the second from right vacuum port on the base plate.  Letting the engine run and warm up doesn't change a thing.

I didn't know the port was missing a vacuum hose until I tracked down the gas leak.  When I put my finger over the vacuum fitting I feel no vacuum.  With my finger blocking the port their is no change in the engine performance.

Anyone have an idea what I have going on here?  The carb is a 17059243

I know the carb needs to be rebuilt but am hoping I might be able to fix this problem until I can save the money up to have it done.  Any help would be great.

it sound like your choke is not opening . start the car and move the choke to full open when it is warmed up a bit. it may be hanging up and causing the problem . if this is the problem just adjust it wide open until you can take it apart and give the carb a complete overhaul .hth

Thanks 429.  I can hold the choke open and there is no change in the engine performance.  I seems to gag on gas.  The tube coming from the base plate still leaks gas and the smoke is as black as ever.  Must be some dirt in there that's mucking up the works.  I'm afraid to let it run for to long because the distributor is right in the front of the carb leak.

I have a second carb that is off a 83 turbo Buick but it has electric hookup's and I have nothing to plug into them.  Could this carb be used in place of the original for awhile?  The throttle linkage looks the same but that's all!  I ask Mr. Ruggles this question but can't remember what he said for the life of me.  He probably said no and I tuned it out lol.

Completely impossible to evaluate how the carb is working unless you go in and put new parts in it and make correct adjustments, etc.....Cliff

as the boss stated . you need to disassemble the carb , install a quality kit .and whatever else is worn out and start from there . that is the only way you will get this to run properly . once you do this and measure all the components there is a ton of help on this forum to get you great results. you must start with good parts or all your time is wasted . fwiw ps. if you plan on doing this yourself and don't have the knowledge buy cliffs book and read it about ten times till you understand how things work . your life will be a lot easier.
