Best Q-Jet Choice - 17058204 or Edelbrock 1904 ?
« on: January 28, 2016, 03:07:01 PM »
Hello All,
My first Cliff's HP Post -
Looking for Q-Jet advice - choosing between two Q-Jet Models listed below.

I have a 1978 Corvette with the following modified small block.
  374 CI  (4.125" Bore x 3.50" Stroke)
  9.4 to 1 Compression
  180cc AFR Cylinder Heads
218* Intake / 228* Exhaust (112* LC) GM Hot Cam
  15" Hg @ 800 RPM Idle Speed with OEM L-48 Q-Jet 17058204

I plan on setting up one of the two following carbs. to Recipe #-2 in Cliff's Book.
OEM Q-Jet 17058204 (Large Air Bleeds .120" Main Jet will need to be reduced)
Edelbrock # 1904 Almost new condition (Maybe less work vs. OEM carb.?)

Note: This car has a 5-Speed Manual Overdrive Transmission, thus low speed
overdrive RPM (1500 to 2000 RPM ) is an important performance objective.

Any guidance and assistance will be greatly appreciated choosing the best carburetor.
Thank You
Larry ( Silver 7T8 )

The end result with either one would be the same.  I'd lean toward the factory carburetor as it is a perfect fit everyplace.  The Edelbrock has a very slight advantage with the single MAB casting, but that disappears when you correctly calibrate the original carburetor for what you are doing.

I would get one of our kits, and we can supply tuning parts for exactly what you are doing.  I'd also get one of our HP choke pull-offs, so the secondaries don't lag, and consider an E-choke conversion if the intake has been changed or heat crossovers blocked off, or if the stock hot air parts aren't in perfect working order......Cliff
