72 TA hot start problem
« on: February 05, 2013, 10:37:20 PM »
Have a stock matching number 72 TA. 455 HO, automatic, 7042270 stock carb. stock primary jets/rods, AT secondary rods (not the stock CR rods).

Issue:
After driving for a while and getting the temp up to normal operating range, then shut motor down down, let sit for 5-10 mins, try to start, motor won't crank over. Not like a weak battery but more that the motor will barely crank around once, if at all and stop. After leaving the car sit for 20-40 minutes or so, the motor will crank over and start. The car runs strong and idles well when up and running at operating temp. Idle on initial start and after sitting for a while and restarted is quite low until a little throttle is provided then levels off fine. Fresh starter rebuild, new heavy duty Interstate battery, timing dialed in to spec.

Observation:
There is a good amount of black soot inside the tail pipes and black soot that mixes with the condensation and drips off the tail pipes leaving bits of black soot and water/black soot mixture on garage floor. I have both my 72 and 73 parked in the garage and I don't see nearly the black soot in the 73 pipes and nothing on the garage floor other than clear condensation while idling. To me sounds like the carb is running rich but just not sure. Would this be a condition where the fuel level in the bowl is too high, causing fuel to percolate and boil over and drip through the main system discharge nozzles causing the rich condition? something different? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.

Not sure the "hot soak" slow cranking is carburetor related, but it sure sounds like the carb could use upgrading with one of our kits.  I'd check the bottom plugs for leaking while it's apart.....Cliff

Old post I know, but something to look at in this situation is the battery cables/connection.  I had this problem on my Pontiac, I thought it was a bad starter until I cleaned the ground cable connection on my engine block.  Problem fixed.  Mine would not want to crank after stopping for gas or other situations where I was stopped for 20 minutes or less.

I'm sure the original poster is probably not gonna read this but "timing dialed in to spec" certainly won't help...
