Good day gents, I hope everyone is doing well.
Grasshopper over here has stupid questions! Thanks for your patience!
The car is a 69 442, 455 c heads, 9.5 comp, old elgin grind 234 int and 244 exh @0.050 centerline 107 intake and 117 exh. 2000 stall, 3.55 rear, 275 50 15 drag radial, torker intake.
Bought the car with a 750 spreadbore holley on there.. it actually runs great with it, good idle, fuel economy, starting etc.. but I have been a gm tech for 25 years and I like q-jets, so here we are.
Wanted to mess around with an 800 q jet and see if I can get the 1/4 time down a little.
Ran a 13.0 with the holley, that cam was installed 4deg advanced, and had a 331 gear. I changed it to "straight up" and put in the 3.55 gear. Have not made it back to the track yet.
I put together a 17057274 carb. It had CV secondary rods and a "H" hanger. There was a secondary hesitation, so I swapped out the "H" for a "N". Now it feels good, pulls good. Was that because the CV is rich and short, and the H pulls high?
This is bad in the book but I have 55p primaries and 72 jets. But I have the apt adjusted and it runs fine, no part throttle driveability issues.
Actually smells ok idling and driving, my eyes aren't sweating. I was idling in a drive through the other day getting ice cream for the kids, I was expecting someone to pass out, vomit or call the police because of my stink, but actually wasn't bad at all!
The only modification I've done is drill idle bypass holes in the base plate 0.100". Idles pretty good, no drip, screw not cranked. No choke plate or shaft as this is a summer cruiser only 100f lately lol.
I'm interested in any thoughts the pros have, especially you Cliff and Ethan.
Is there anything in my pile that I should sub in or tinker with for more balls at the strip? I know that's a dumb question, but the track is far away so looking for suggestions before I blow a day there.
Here's my pile
secondary rods:
CV
CP
CJ
DB
CH
Primary rods"
55p
47c - kind of a wash, one tip is a bit bent
39b
52k
Jets:72, 73, 77, 66
Hangers: H, J, K, M,N
I also have an 800 olds 403 carb 17059251, but I got a little horny with the pine-sol. Looks a little rough and etchy so I didn't use it.
I do have the book, almost bought another one. I forgot I bought one 12 years ago- just found it in the basement, memory going- possibly related to the talking to myself thing.
Interested in anything you guys have to say, thanks
Chuck
