Starting on a new carburetor
« on: July 08, 2010, 09:52:41 AM »
I'm tring to put a carburetor together for my son's car. It is a 54 Chevy with a 305 and auto trans. the motor is stock exept for an elderbrock intake, headers and a cam with 216 duration at .05 lift and .454 lift and 110 lobe separation. Now, I have a few Quadrajets to chose from as we have been collecting them at flea markets, this is what I have, 17058477- '78 pontaic, 17080213-'80 chevy, 17057230-'77 cadillac, 7045224-'75 chevy. I bought the book sold on this site so I guess the best one to start with would be the '78 pontaic or the '80 chevy. What do you all think? I was also looking at the recipes in the book for a starting point but they are for a 350 motor, what should I do to compensate for the smaller displacement? Go down a size or two in jet size? I was just looking for a starting point.
Thanks for the help.

I'd use the carburetor in the best condition, and latest production.  The 17080213 would be my first choice if it is in nice shape?

A 216 duration cam on a 110LSA in a stock compression 305 is a pretty big camshaft.  I'd use the 3rd recipe from our book to set it up, staying on the lower end of the range of sizes provided.  It's going to want some idle fuel over the stock settings......Cliff

Thanks Cliff for the help, The 17080213 is in poor shape with stripped fuel filter threads and alot of water damage so after looking at them I was going to try the 17058477 carb. The car has the 7045224 on it now, and after backing out the idle screws another turn it idles pertty good even in gear. As far as I know that carb is in stock form, I have not taken it apart yet. The thing about the 17058477 is that it is a California emmissions carb, should I do anything about that? The only thing I see different is that it has a large vent exiting the front of the carb. I can plug that as it has another vent going straight up out of the air horn. What do you think?

The Pontiac carb is a nice unit, but I would no relocate the vent, most air cleaner bases will accept the vent with a hole in the right place.  Just seal it up as needed.

Rebuild it with Viton parts, and calibrate it exactly for the application.  We sell complete HP kits for those carburetors, and jets and metering rods, HP pull-offs, etc........Cliff
