Q-jet fuel economy stories
« on: June 28, 2021, 12:28:45 PM »
Just curious if anybody is taking summer road trips and tracking their fuel consumption?

I got 19.6 MPG during a trip across the Ohio turnpike this past weekend in my 1970's land yacht, running about 74 MPH with the A/C blasting.

I just did my first (full) fillup on my Squarebody. I will keep you posted. Last year got 16 mpg in the Rockies with about 1000#
lbs of camping gear doing 110-130 kph.

Best I ever got was 24mpg. With a 68 Camaro 10:1 355ci, 5spd. All highway at roughly 2000-2400rpm. Cliff's kit, advise and recipe. Best working carb ever.

My stock '74 SD-455 TA auto w/3:08 got 14mpg driving 70mph on various interstates from the Woodward Dream Cruise back to Chicago years ago.  Around town it only gets 9mpg.

9mpg around town?  Unlikely you'd make it thru a full tank without a few FULL throttle blasts!.......

Oh there were a few full throttle blasts "around town". All in the name of scientific inquiry of course!

That's expected, don't think I've ever ran a tank of gas thru the Ventura where it didn't get "cleaned out" half a dozen times....or more!....

I'd probably be above 20 MPG if I stayed out of the secondaries... And I'll admit I get right down to 12 MPG during summertime city driving; running the A/C compressor, idling around jobsites, "hurry-up-and-stop" traffic in suburbia, waiting in line at the brew-through, etc...

I'd guestimate 14~15 with my old 454 setup on the expressway, In OD, With convertor locked up. Like many of you, It's a challenge to stay out of the secondaries from time to time. Speedo reads 7 slow so couldn't get an exact figure.

My '79 K10 has a 350, sm465, 3.73:1 gears and 32/11.50/R15's.
It gets 10mpg ...it can get 12 (just not the way I drive it) ;)
