Mallory 140 pump

Cliff,fuel pump quit,took it off,disassembled (internal brushes)and installed brush kit(they were done)pump is 5 years old.It looked good inside the pump,no signs of wear and the bearings turned smooth seemed ok.Cleaned the motor and turned the armature a little to clean it up,reassembled and it works fine.I was wondering if I were to replace the bearings do you have to remove the brush holder plate to get the bearing out and then restake it?I have looked for rebuild instructions with no luck.Any knowledge you could share.

I'd stay away from the bearings unless they are bad.  I've rebuilt both of my 140 pumps once, brushes only.  One just recently, and the bearings were fine.  It had been in service nearly 10 years.

That's about all that goes bad with them, brushes wear down till they no longer touch and they quit working.

They last a LOT longer if you have a return line set-up......Cliff

Ok,the pump was used for two years with a sumped stock tank 1/2" feed and return on original 3/8 supply,it would suck air when braking unless the tank was full(25 gallon!)I have since replaced the tank with a 15 gal. fuel cell and 1/2 return.no more air when braking.So i am sure that contributed to the brushes early retirement.
