1983 Hurst Olds QJ questions
« on: January 12, 2012, 09:57:29 AM »
I am in the process of restoring a 1983 Hurst Olds.  The toplate is damaged - thin wall @ the pivot shaft for the acc pump.  The car has a 17083553 carb and the top plate is 17072763.  I do not know if this is the original top plate.  I got lucky and found a 3553 carb on CL for $20 as only about 3000 of these were built.  It arrived yesterday and it has a different top plate number of 17074700.  Which is correct or does it matter?  I also bought along with the 3553 a 17086008 hoping i could use it's top plate on my broken 3553.

I am seeking some guidance on the proper top plate.  Also it would appear both carbs have very different pulls off on the right side.  Do any of these pull offs look like factory original?  Im inclined to believe the carb that was on my car is original because it only has 53,000 miles but i also have no way of knowing what the prior owner may have done.

My goal is to rebuild and restore one 3553 carb and have the other as a spare but can not do so until i can confirm which is the correct top plate.

Thanks for any assistance you can provide.

Pete

 Pete,
The 3553 you got from CL has the right Secondary Choke Pull-Off. The one on your original 3553 Qjet, I believe is incorrect. As for the top plate, I don't know what the difference between the two 3553 Qjet's you have. Since the original Seconday Choke Pull-Off is on the CL 3553 Qjet, I would use that one. I don't think it really matters though. They both look the same to me.

The only difference that I can think of between all of the CCC top plates, is the size of the main airbleeds.  Most Chevy models continued to use the huge .120" bleeds, other makes often had much smaller MAB's.  We have drive in airbleeds available, so you could use a Chevy airhorn if needed.....Cliff

Thanks for the replies.

I was able to get info from another Hurst Olds owner and his top plate was 17077334.

So in total there are examples of 17072763, 17074700 and 17077334 top plates all on 17083553 carbs.

Maybe what i am now beginning to wonder is how many different top plates are correct for 17083553, i guess i automatically assumed it was 1:1.  That appears to be a completely inappropriate assumption.  If i interpret your post correctly any top plate iwth .120 AB is fine or any other top plate i have could work with a mod.

I believe i read somewhere previously that the Hurst Olds carbs was different from the based model Cutlass V8 qj.
