Fuel shooting out top of carb

I have a 1972 Formula 455 HO that I bought from the second owner.  When I bought it the air cleaner and carb was in the trunk, and I was told that, at one time they had a gentlemen working on the carb, but stopped the work and the car sat in the garage since 1991.  I put the carb back on the car, but hooked it up to a gas can as I took the gas tank out to take care of a couple of pin holes in the trunk pan.  When I started the car up it ran fine for about 10 seconds and then fuel began shooting out the top of the carb.  I am thinking that it might be the needle/seat, or maybe a stuck float?  I have Cliff's book, but I am wondering if it is possible to change out the float, needle, seat, and gasket while the carb is still in the car?  If so where would I get the parts and procedures to replace.  Sorry for the long write up.  Any help would be much appreciated.

welcome aboard 56 you must be young with a good back.to answer your question. yes you can do what you want by leaving the carb on.for me its a lot easier on my back to pull it off.cliff sells all the good parts you need at a good price.his SR kit should have all the parts you need. call him. give him the CARB NO. and he will fix you up. hope this answers your question . dean

Thanks for the reply!!  Didn't know how long it would take.  I guess for the back's sake I will just remove the carb and fix it on the table.  I can't stay bent over and work in the engine compartment for more than a couple of minutes without having to stop and straighten out or I'll get stuck that way.  I can see with the multiple cars and most have quadrajet's I'll be reading up and posting here quite a bit.

Never a good idea to work on the carb on the engine.  Too hard on the back, and too easy to drop something into the engine, or down onto the intake where it may be difficult to get to.

I would get one of our SR kits, they contain upgraded components for those carburetors, far superior to over the counter parts......Cliff
