found this site while researching a couple carbs I have. I am pleasantly surprised to find you lean to Pontiac! I want to go back to running a Q-jet on my firebird and dug out some old ones I had lying around. Can you tell me if ether one would be worth using. One is a Carter 4853S the other 7028282.  I have heard the opinion that Carter Q-jets are junk is that true?

P.S. what is with all the nonsense Roberthony is posting on this forum?

Welcome to CHP!

I would look for a '75-up Buick, Olds or Pontiac Qjet. Those two Qjets you have will cause you headaches to modify. Also, what is the setup of your Firebird? Cam specs, engine, trans, etc.?

As for what that person is posting, it is spam. We get them on here occasionally. They should be blocked here soon. ;)

You would think people have better things to do than pollute a forum.
I am not racing, just want a good working Quad for street. I have some others
if I can find them in storage. I liked the Carter cause it is fairly clean and
has a divorced choke that works with the manifold I want to use but that's
not necessary. Also noticed it has pretty large secondary discharge ports so
thought it may be a performance model. The Carter numbers don't tell me much
4853S   E2  am I right at dating it may 1972  And the other one  7028282 to be
a 1968 for Checker or marine? Thanks for the help and I'll see if I can the find others.

You are correct. E2 is May 1972. Carter Qjet 4853S was used on the '68-'74 Pontiacs and is a Service Replacement carb. I would stay away from this carb, as it is a Service Replacement.

Qjet 7028282 is a '68 Marine Qjet and is related to the 7028280 Qjet. Cliff would be best to answer, if this would work.

 What are your other carbs?

 ....

Are Service Replacement carbs faulty?  What sort of problems are associated with this unit compared to an OE Q-jet?

One more question....
Is there a lookup posted online for Carter Service Replacement part numbers?   What applications was the 4853S carb built for?
Thanks

 Welcome to CHP!

As for your question, SR carbs are definitely faulty. They are full of incorrect parts and are complete JUNK. As for problems, anything inside the carb from flooding to idle problems, etc. You just don't know what will happen to them. :(

None that I know of. Sorry. :( I do not have my manual in front of me, but one internet source shows it as a Service Replacement for the 1968-70 Pontiac 350cid and 428cid cars.

Thanks.  I didn't know they had issues.  I have a Carter 4853S carb that I bought in the late 80s with the intentions of using it on my 1970 RAIII engine.  I actually had it bolted onto the manifold but removed it prior to starting the engine for the first time because I found a NOS 800 cfm carb.   At least that is what I was told by the seller.....they were a reputable Pontiac restoration and performance shop so I trusted their opinion and products.  The NOS carb ran great and I used it for almost 20 years.  I put the SR carb on a box in storage all this time.  I pulled it out to see if it would work on my new project and it had a hand written toe tag that read '68-'70 400 and '71 455 ram air.  I have no idea if the tag is correct....it is hand written so it could have come from anywhere.

I did open it up.  It looks virgin inside.  All the brass parts look new and I didn't see anything that looked questionable but then again I wouldn't expect to be able to easily identify QC issues at a glance.    The secondary metering rods are "BE"  which is the same as a 7028273 carb that I compared against.  The two carbs looked identical however I did not get to open the 7028273 carb....the owner only allowed me to pull the secondary rod hangers.....

I guess I can give it a try and see how it runs.  Maybe I will get lucky.  Thanks for the info.
