Q-Jet ID...
« on: November 06, 2018, 03:56:37 PM »
Hi Guys.

I've got a weird Q-Jet that I can't seem to positively identify.  Here goes
It's a single booster (small outer venturi ring only below) and the carb number is 7041270 with a date code of 1589 and the plant is "VG".  I would have thought this carb NOT to exist based on these numbers.  Here's what I got from this and it doesn't make any sense to me...

71 Pontiac with 455HO (only), based on venturi, BUT built a year beforehand?

Maybe a mis-stamp on the date (9 vs. 0), but I also thought the single booster carbs were manual trans only.  The main body "ID pad area" has not been tampered with (casting grain is not ground, polished, numbers are clear, etc.).

Thoughts?

I once had a 7041270 but it was a service replacement, date around 1974 or 1975 if my memory is right.  Could it be available all the way to 79 ?  That I don't know but it could be a possibility .

   Frank.

Thanks Frank,

I hadn't considered a service replacement...  That makes the most sense.  Any thoughts on the auto vs. stick code?

The 1971 single booster carburetors will be 7041263, 7041267, 7041268, 7041270 or 7041273.

They made quite a few Service Replacement units over the years but they lack the Plant Code and have a later Julian date from what I've seen here.   They also did not make the Ram Air manual transmission carburetors as Service units.  That is typically the rules but I have seen a few exceptions to those rules over the years.....Cliff
