Sucking noise on shutdown
« on: June 07, 2019, 04:51:42 PM »
I'm getting the car lined out, but I've noticed when I shutdown the car the carb makes noises. Immediately after the engine has completely stopped the carb sounds like its gurgling or sucking. Really it faintly sounds like a Turkey gobbling. The primary nozzle look a bit wet too.

Could it be too high float or bad needle and seat?

Remove the air cleaner and see if there is any fuel vapor coming up out of the carb.

This would indicate fuel draining into the engine.  This happens when the bottom plugs are leaking, N/S not holding, fuel level too high, or missing upper idle airbleeds (common problem when folks miss-match parts)........Cliff

I had someone shut it off so I could see what happened. No fuel vapor was coming out of carb. The nozzles were also dry.

Thanks for the replies. There is no charcoal canister on my car (69 LeMans). It made the same gurgling noise immediately after shutdown. It only happens for a few seconds.

There was no vapor and the nozzles were dry for the duration of the sound.

Can you at least narrow down where the noise is coming from?

Yes, my apologies. The noise is definitely coming from the carb. It happens so fast it's hard to get a pulse on where exactly it is, but it sounds like its coming from the fuel bowl.

If it's draining some fuel into the intake it would not fire back up well or act flooded if you tried to restart it.......Cliff
