What's the best way to remove bowl plugs?
« on: April 05, 2011, 05:06:47 PM »
My 3 small bowl plugs are leaking a little bit. So, I want to pull them and install some of Cliff's set screws with marine tex epoxy. What's the best method to remove those small plugs?.....and the big ones too, while we're talking about it?  Thanks!

I drill out the small plugs with a .140-.150" drill bit, most are soft lead or aluminum and can be removed in seconds.

I use an abrasive disk and remove any swaged area around the plugs.

Then drill a small hole in them and thread a wood or drywall screw into the hole.

They pull easily at this point with a pair of wire cutters or clamp the head of the screw in a vise and pull the casting away from the vise, leaving the screw and the plug....Cliff
