for Oldsmobile 1971 442 automatic#7041257
« on: January 26, 2012, 09:26:54 AM »
I have ROCHESTER #17085213 can I use it on my 1971 Olds 442 automatic 3.08 rear ratio?
The stock carb should be 7041257 but the one on the car has no numbers. The secondaries on the car don't open and fuel leaks out of the bowls.......... so if it sits a few days the bowls are empty. You have to crank it a lot to get it to fire up.
Thanks

Dean"
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\so I take that it's a good carb to build for my Oldsmobile. It's pretty much stock and what I found about the carb is it's a truck carb for a Chevy but I'm not sure about the carbs' use. I'm not sure if it was ever rebuilt before but  the shafts are in great shape except it was for a Chevy truck undisclosed displacement . Can this carb work with a stock 1971 442 automatic without too many alterations ??
I read the book and not sure if it's stage one?
 Thanks

does it have the kick down features?not sure how a 1971 442 trans kickdown works. there are a lot of guys on this site that play with them.they would know .your new carb should have elec choke so you can get rid of the old stuff unless your trying to keep it stock looking.cliff sells a nice elec choke and new pulloff plus all the proper jets and rods. dean

You can't make a 1985 carb stock looking 1971 model :-*

The main issues are throttle lever style, choke style, fuel inlet position, and air cleaner fitment especially with Pontiac carbs.  A lesser issue is having enough vacuum ports; shouldn't be a problem going with a newer carb on an older vehicle.

Well Put
I've got the ram air package on the 71 Olds so in that respect it's similar to a Pontiac. It's a Ch@vy style fuel inlet and looking up the carb numbers it seems to be from a 1985 manual truck

I just wonder if the carb is a suitable replacement for the Olds. Will I have to drill out idle passages, change jetting /hangers etc. It seem to be low mileage where the primary secondary pivots are tight.

The later model emission calibrated Chevy carb will need some help to work on the 1971 Olds engine.  It has a lot of differences, side inlet, linkage, vacuum ports, etc.  It would be easier and a better end result to build a 1971-74 Oldsmobile front inlet carburetor instead....Cliff

If I should decide to be stubborn and try to use this carb.....It has
primary jets/75
primary rods61s
secondary rodsEK
no extra tubes on the airhorn
single main air bleed
.038idle tube
channel restrictor .070
main air bleed.086
bypass air.055
upper idle bleed .068
lower .076
What you think........a rebuild kit with which primary rods & jets would be suitable?
A large 75 primary jet with an even larger 61s rod sounds too lean for a stock 442?

Thanks

That jetting sounds like it may be a motor home or BBC carburetor?

It will be fine for what you are doing, but I've never seen the idle downchannel restrictions at .070" in those, that I can remember.

I'd go up one jet size, and smaller secondary metering rods, one of our kits, and make sure the pull-off and e-choke are working correctly.....Cliff
