Points Conversions...
« on: July 29, 2012, 10:08:02 AM »
I was wondering what kind of points conversions you guys are using. MSD, Crane, Pertronix...

I have a stock 1964 Delco single points distributor.

Last week, I swapped alternators to one with a 5" pulley to see how the lower drag would help my motor. I have the 7.5 crank pulley. Right after the swap, I ran my 462 and it sounded like the rev limiter was kicking in at 4000 rpm. So, I removed the big pulley alt put the old one back on, thinking it was the alt. and just for the heck of it, checked the dwell, sure enough it was 25 instead of 30-32...

I think it's time to swap the points.. They do work well so long as there in adjustment..

Any thoughts?

Thanks, Jeff

jeff. i dont know how well a dui works on a gm but i had massive quality issues on a ford . sent it back twice and still had to fix it myself.and it was way overpriced. fwiw. my buddy that builds engines for a living  installs petronics and the customers are happy.

Well I found the trouble.

I bought a few sets of vintage Delco points last year and installed a set a few months ago. The springs were fairly soft and even thought they were American made and old they weren't the best of quality.. I put an old set of cleaned up Accel #110128 points back in and my 462 revs to the moon now...

I still suspect that Pertronix coil isn't the best... Looking for a new coil...
