Cleaning exterior of quadrajet to prep for teardown

Would I be good to go with Brake Parts Cleaner to break down engine dirt and grime? then finish off with Simple Green and soft bristle brush then dry it all up with compressed air?

So I tried it..it helped but I still have some nasty black deposits around the base. I dont want to use anything to harsh on the parts. How do these dips work? are there some better than others and made for purposes of rust removal only vs varnish
