Hi all,
I'm a diehard Pontiac enthusiast from New Zealand, this is my first time posting here but I've been a past contributor to other Pontiac forums.

I'm wondering which of the following carbs would be best to rebuild/modify #7043262 or 17057274?

Carb will be going on my `70 GTO which is running a 40thou o/s 400 with #13 heads, Crower 60916 cam, 1.65 HS rockers and a Performer RPM intake(engine`recipe'was provided by Cliff R many years ago and goes very well!)The GTO has a TH400 trans & 3.55 rear...

 Welcome to CHP!

 I would go with the 17057274 carb. I would also get Cliff's book and read through it thoroughly. Lots of great info. The 17057274 would also be the best to modify. Ask lots of questions on here and Cliff or other's will help you through the modifying process.

Yep, got a copy of Cliff's book and was thinking of that carb as it looks in the best condition however, the other carb looks less complicated...

Ok, would you suggest using recipe 2 or 3 for my combination? Also, any suggestions for metering rod/jet sizes, hangers etc? I'd like to order them at the same time as I order the overhaul kit.

+2 on using the later 17057274 carburetor.  That just happens to be the same number that I use on my own engines.  They don't need a lot of help.

I would order one of our kits, tuning parts, quick release choke pull-off, and convert it to electric choke.  The end result will be a really nice high performance carburetor. 

Right on the dyno mine has outran Holley HP 950's and 850 double pumper carbs every single time we've tested them against it!
