1981 Z28 ccc carb
« on: February 26, 2015, 04:50:24 PM »
I have a survivor 81 Z28 mostly all stock I bought it with a older non ccc Q- jet and older hei distributor installed but have all the factory parts. I am thinking about building a vortec head 350 with flat top pistons and the GM lt4 hot cam roller cam. The stock engine is 175 hp I just can't live with that. I would like to put the ccc stuff back on I am a GM tech I have worked on hundreds of the computer Q-jets in the late 80's and 90's but have never tried one with a bigger performance camshaft. What kind of mods if any would be needed to make it work right with this engine. The cam specs are 492 lift 525 with 1.6 rocker and 218  228 duration @050 inch lift, lobe separation 112. Also are there any concerns with modern fuels and these carbs? Do you have kits with alcohol resistance parts for them.

Welcome to the forum.
Cliffs parts are great for today's fuels, so you don't have to worry there.
With the cam and piston changes, you will need to make modifications to the idle tubes and down channel restrictions so it will idle correctly on the idle circuits, without opening the primary blades too far.
If you don't already have Cliffs quadrajet book, I recommend getting it.  It will show details and describe what needs to be done.

I do have Cliffs book I used it to build the Q-jet on my 1969 Camaro works great can idle all day long without loading up. It is by far the most useful book I have ever had its definitely the Q-jet bible. I was hoping someone had experience with that camshaft not sure how much vacuum it will have. I thought keeping the computer carb would be different than how most people would build the car.

The factory CCC carb will work flawlessly with a 350cid build using flat top pistons and Vortec heads.  Make sure to keep the quench as tight as possible, we shoot for .035" here for those engines.

The carb will need a little help to work well with that cam, but is fully up to the task.  We have kits for those carbs with ethanol compatible parts.  I can help with the tune as well, when you are ready for parts call the shop, we're here 8am-4pm, M-F EST....tks...Cliff
