Factory jets/rods 17085003
« on: April 30, 2015, 09:14:16 AM »
I'm new to this form or any form but was looking for help on my quadrajet. The # is 17085003 that's on my 86k20 with sm465 4.10 gears with 33 12.50 16.5. Engine was a 305ho and wanting to pull more weight I put stock bottom end 350.
Top is sportsman II heads with 1.6 rockers with taller alunium no name intake square bore with adapter and stock cam for now. Not a good combination but it's what I had laying around.
The problem is the carb ran good on the 305 but I caint seem to get it to run well on the 350. It idle rich but everywhere else on primary side is fine. The question is what supposed to be in it from factory?
I took out 75 jet but rod I belive is 58? I'm now at 77 but it's too rich and 76 looses a lot of power and woundering if I should go to 78 jet but have no idea on rods. Should I get a difernt carb?
Hopefully gave enough information. I rebiuld it bout 3 yrs ago bc of trash when it was on 305. Also truck has long tube headers with 2" dual no cats
Thanks

I ment to say with 77 jets and the 58? Rods it runs ok everywhere except idle. When I start the truck cold and 45 degrees I can reach inside and hit starter and it fires up and idles lil rough but so soothes out in few sec with out touching pedal. Choke is locked out right now bc of the oil pressure sending unit for electric choke not hooked up

 Welcome to CHP!

After 1980, they really did not put much info in manuals to tell what it came from the factory with. But, this oddly is in my manual. :)

It came with .075" Primary Jets, 61S Primary Metering Rods, K Seondary Hanger and EF Secondary Metering Rods.

Thanks. Just woundering if I should try 78 jet and next step bigger rod. What size rods aviable in "s" rods.  When I went from 305ho stock to the 350, the 75 didn't have any power. I went up one size at a time with beter improvement but the bigest I had was 77. The reason I woundering is I tried a 17057202 and it felt strong but horn has a crack between secoundarys and wasn't sure of it and i belive its factory with 77 and 52. Being I didn't have nothin bigger I kept the 17085003.
I havnt messed much with carbs mostly bc everything was stock and ran good. I blow a 383 stroker I belive bc of carb not properly tuned and ran lean at top end and don't won't to do that again. This truck will be used mostly for pulling and some play.

The 75 jets with 61S metering rods sounds like a big block 454 motorhome application.  Those carbs are PLENTY with the stock factory 75 jets, and the 61S rods are full taper.

The stock 75 jets may actually be fine, use the APT system to fine tune the A/F ratio at part throttle.

Do not compare what is found in the earlier q-jets like the 17057202, those carbs have a completely different main airbleeds set-up and are pretty lean even with 77 jets in them.

A single plane intake and adapter to spread bore is also a poor choice for an intake set-up.  Not sure what camshaft is being used, but single plane intakes are almost always poor choices for small block applications, as they lack low end torque right to start with, not to mention the miss-match you get putting an adapter on one to spread bore......Cliff

Thank cliff, but I couldn't find any info on "s" rods. Do these have .036 tip? How much do they taper by? .010 or .005.

Where should my metering rods start to come up with engine load? Idle is 20.5" and cruise at 60mph flat is 14.5-15". SM465 transmion. Thanks for the help

Drove truck to work today and before I left I put the 75 jets in it. Went few miles and felt slogish so stoped and brought the timing up and helped some. Went 8 mile at steady 2500 rpm (62-64mph) and cut it off pulled over. Took plug out and was white. Brought the apt up 3 from seated. Went another 8-10 miles and checked it and brought it to 5.5 turns from seated. Feel good at cruise but sluggish accelerating. Got home and checked plugs and they seem ok but stop and go and long driveway before that.
The cam right now is basically the 290 hp cam specs and the intake is a knock off of elderbrock performer (dual plane).
Heads is 200cc intake runners. 2.02/1.60 64 cc with 12cc pistons. 1.6 rockers to help lift. Truck weighs 8,600 gross and someone put 305 88+ from camaro and the 350 is all I had.
Would the 76 jet be to big?
Would a stock spread bore intake be beter than the performer with the 200cc heads. I never go over 4,500
