need help choosing jet size
« on: February 10, 2016, 08:37:27 AM »
I am rebuilding a 17080298 and it has 48 metering rods. I cannot tell what kind of jets are in it because they are all scored up. the 305 that the carb is going on is nothing special just a rv cam and an edelbrock performer intake.

what do you guys think

First I would recommend getting one of our kits for it.  Our kits are not only the most complete in this industry, they have the right parts in them, and additional parts that are needed for a complete/correct rebuild of the carburetor.  We include a secondary cam/spring, float, filter/spring, complete accl pump assembly and even a new retainer for the power piston in every kit.  I can also supply tuning parts at the same time.  That carb is pretty lean on the primary side, and a slight change in jets, metering rods and pp spring will really help it.....Cliff

thanks for replying cliff. I just bought your book. I have to rebuild a carb for a 400 hp 383 and I need to use your recipe. this carb we are talking about currently is going on a pretty stock 305 that I took the computer off of. I had a carb all dialed in but I sold it and have to start from scratch.

I was just wondering where I should start as far as jets are concerned on this carb because I need to get it running and sold so I can move on to new projects.

I have also purchased your bushing kit.

I will purchase a kit from you to do the carb on the 383 but I have already got a carb kit for the 305 carb. I really plan on putting more quadrajets on my restorations and using your parts and know how!

by the way I am a huge pontiac guy

An RV cam in a "stock" 305 is pretty far from "stock".  Unless the compression ratio was increased it will have more idle/off idle fuel requirements than a stock 305 would have.

Measure all the idle and main airlbeeds, idle tubes, DCR's and bypass air and post the results.

For sure you will need main jets, metering rods and power piston spring for the main system.  Likely going to need the idle tubes opened up and DCR's as well.

Those later carbs are excellent, but emission calibrated, so very restrictive for fuel delivery on non "stock" applications......Cliff
