May have screwed up my fuel bowl.
« on: July 03, 2016, 04:55:05 PM »
Hey all, just registered.  I'm currently restoring (read = trying) a 76 Trans Am and I'm at the point where I'm digging into the carb.  It's a 7044262 and was already in pretty darned good shape when I bought it.

Going by Cliff's book I came to the point where it was time to remove the idle tubes and what I think are the main jets.  I'll confess, I completely misunderstood what was written in the book and used a punch to drive the idle tubes all the way down the bore.  Not so much of an issue.  I was able to get them out.

Then, I tried using a large flat blade screwdriver to remove what I thought were the main jets.  Well the tip of the "main jet" got mangled up pretty badly so I thought ok drill it out.......

Uhhm...... was this supposed to just unscrew or was it pressed in..... what's the deal and is this saveable?

I appreciate any and all replies.

Those are the boosters and they are not meant to come out, as far as I know. The accelerator pump feeds them, I believe. The primary seats are in the bottom of the fuel bowl, they do unscrew for service.

I'll keep that in mind.  I think I may start looking for a year correct carb.  Thanks man.

I have NOS booster inserts, but the old ones must be pulled out without damaging the bore that they are pressed into......Cliff

That's very good to know.  How does one go about removing them w/out further damage?

If you are restoring a 1976 T/A it's not the correct carburetor anyhow.  The 1976 Pontiac q-jets are better carburetors, and not to difficult to obtain, plus everything fits.....Cliff

I understand that, however, wouldn't a correct (later) year carb have less performance value?  Just asking.  Also, the rebuild kit I ordered was for that 74.  Would that same kit work in a 76 carb?

Thanks.

The later carburetors are larger CFM with better features, so more potential for both power and fuel economy.

Very few of the parts from the early kit will work in it however.....Cliff
