casting #17058715
« on: February 23, 2010, 01:15:19 PM »
Hello! I have a few questions about a Rochester Q-jet that I have.

It is casting #17058715

From this, I believe it is a 1978 Chevy carb for a manual transmission car.

What does the second number 7 mean?

Can I use this carb on a Pontiac 400 motor with automatic transmission?

Thank you very much for your time! 8)

That is strange that there would be a number 7  in that position. Usually it is a 1 or 2 for federal carb ID, or it is a 4 or 5 for california emissions carb ID.  Are you sure that is the number.  {sometimes a 2 looks like a 7 if the stamping is not even} Oh well, maybe Cliff knows. {hey Cliff....}.
As far as using this carb for a pontiac with an automatic, it depends on what automatic. Some trannys have a "kickdown cable" {early turbo 350} or cable for throttle pressure {latter turbo 350}. Your carb may or may not have the place on it to hook up the cable for the trans. Anyway, whatever trans that you use, if it has a cable coming from it , this must be accomadated for on the carb linkage. Sometimes this is easy to adapt for and sometimes it is not.  If it is not, you may consider sending the baseplate to Cliff to have it modified. Either by changing out the throttle shaft or having the appropriate mods done to yours if possible. So, there is always a way to make it work, the question is how much aggrevation and money do you have to go through to make it work.  The turbo 400 does not have a cable so if you have that trans  you're good to go.

Thanks for your help guys!

I will have to double check the number when I get home, but I am pretty sure I read it right, as it is stamped in a small circle on the top front of the carb as well as on the side.

My transmission is a TH350 with the detent/kickdown cable (the cable is currently unhooked, as the previous owner installed an Edlebrock carb).

I can take a picture of the q-jet, if that will help to see if I have the right setup for the cable.

The numbers in the small circles are castings numbers, not the carburetor number.

Check on the drivers side of the main casting, right above the secondary throttle shaft.

There should be a carburetor number, Plant Code and Julian date stamped on the casting...Cliff

Ah you guys were right, I did misread the number, it is a 2! Sorry about that!! My dimly lit garage and old eyes tricked me!

Here's a pic of the carb. Does it have the right bracket for a kickdown cable?

that is a strange looking chevy carb. I guess the lower nub would be for kick-down. I am not sure though.

That is a Buick carburetor, probably 76-79.  The kick down linkage is correct for a TH350.

The part number should be 1705X240 or 244.  The X would be a 6, 7, 8 or 9.  I could tell more with a frontal view of the carburetor.....Cliff
