Carb info needed
« on: February 20, 2017, 08:58:26 AM »
Hello, I just joined the forum, I have a QJet carb I need some info on.  The number is 17081285.  It came off an all original 1981 Pontiac firebird with a factory 305 SBC.  I am currently building a 355 SBC to put in its place, and I would like to use this carb, as I would like to be able to mount the factory shaker on the carb and not the hood.   An this carb be built to suit my needs?  Here are some specs of the engine.  Any help would be great

350 4 bolt main bored .030 over
Speed pro hyperutectic Pistons
Edelbrock E-Street heads 2.02/1.60 valves, 64CC chambers
.488/.510 c

 Welcome to CHP!

What cam do you have? Specs? Depending on the cam, it sounds like you may go with Recipe #2. Do you have Cliff's book? If not, GET IT! If so, read it thoroughly. Sounds like you have a good carb. I also believe it has electric choke, too, right? You carb will be choked down on emissions, so I would talk to Cliff and get his HP Kit. Comes with mostly everything you'll need. Probably higher jetting and smaller rods. We'll see what he says first. Again, welcome to the club bud!

Cam specs are in the picture I'm trying to upload with my iPhone, I just ordered Cliffs book today and can't wait to get ahold of it.  Thanks

I would probably go with Recipe #2. READ THAT BOOK RELIGIOUSLY. It's like the Qjet encyclopedia.

I'd rethink on the cam.

Pretty "hefty" cam for a 355 SBC build.  It will LOVE a lot of compression, hopefully you're at least 10.5 to one or a little higher......Cliff

Yeah I have been doing some thinking on the cam, I think I'm going to tone it down a bit, I just want a nice cruiser that makes decent power.  I will be making some calls to the cam companies.
