Bad rebuild?
« on: June 12, 2010, 07:23:38 PM »
I took the CCC Qjet that was in my MCSS out to inspect it since I have been having idle adjustment problems with it. I had a local carb shop rebuild the carb last year and now some red flags are showing. I found gas dripping out of the TPS sensor. Also both the M/C sol and TPS connectors have been painted to look new, (the paint is now starting to flake off). Are these signs of a poor rebuild?  :-\

Found one more problem, one of the forward air horn screws is not tight but I can not turn it in or out, it seems to be frozen. Hope it is not stripped.  >:(

I've never seen anyone paint TPS or MC solenoids.  Not sure if that was done for cosmetic reasons or to look like new parts were installed?

Don't know how fuel can leak out of the TPS area, it's not in the fuel bowl where it goes thru the casting?

Pretty rare for those screw holes to strip out, or the screws to get stuck unless the unit spent some time outside in the rain and heavily oxidized/corroded, etc.....Cliff

Found out the problem with the screw, it had defective threads. It looks like the shop replaced the screws with new ones but one was bad. The treads in the carb casting were not badly damaged so I was able to clean them up with a tap and install a used, good screw from a junked Qjet I had lying around. I wonder if the lose housing scrw ay have been the source of my problems since it could have caused cross leakage inside the carb? The defective airhorn screw was at the front of the carb by the TPS.

Unlikely one loose screw would cause a fuel or cross-leaks.  The later carbs used a LOT more screws than earlier units right to start with.....Cliff

Found something else, all 3 of the base plate screws were loose so I tighten them down. Could that cause crossleaks?

Unlikely as the two long rear screws and front mounting bolts do a good job of holding the parts together.  The thick gaskets they use help as well.....Cliff

I found another bad sign today. I went to remove the fuel filter in the inlet and it was bent at one end. The filter was bent so bad that the metal end cap broke off, probably  letting unfiltered fuel into the carb.  :o  You would think a shop could install a fuel filter without breaking it.
