Got my carb back and choke stays on fast idle
« on: April 09, 2019, 05:40:32 PM »
I got my carb back from cliff and installed it.  Starts right up but even with the engine hot it stays on fast idle.  My question is theres a vacuum looking port coming off the front of the choke housing, is it supposed to have vacuum?  Its just open now.  Its an electric choke with 12 v power running to it.  Thanks, Ben

The choke is adjustable as for "how long" it stays on.  If you loosen up the three screws holding the electric choke unit and turn it a bit clockwise, that should shorten the time it stays on.

Are you positive you have 12 v to the choke while the ignition switch is on ?  I'm guessing you do but never a bad idea to double check.

What is the carb number ?

I'll have to look I don't remember.  It is on a 79 k5 blazer if that helps.  I checked it with a test light, but didn't actually test it to see how many volts.  It worked before I had it rebuilt.

We test them before shipping to verify the choke works with a 12 volt source, and dial in all the basic settings.

Haven't had any defective electric chokes to date, but if we installed a new one an you can verify it isn't heating up we'll replace it on our dime......Cliff

Is the port coming off the front of the choke housing supposed to be open?

Doesn't matter, the vacuum to the housing is blocked off.......Cliff

Try working the plates/flaps a few times with your fingers.

Fuse was blown for the choke.  On a different note what should I set my pressure regulator at?  I have a vortec block, so I am running a carter electric fuel pump.

6 to 6.5 psi will work fine with the later carburetors.  If you are running a return even better, to take some load off the pump.......Cliff
