lack of power?
« on: February 06, 2011, 05:44:35 AM »
so when i start my car i warm it up for a few minutes,
& then drive off and it lacks power tell it warms up
takes a few miles or about ten minutes befor normal?
Is this a carb problem? Choke works fine when i checked.
I deleted the hot air tube from exhaust, and snorkel for
a open element filter, and wonder is that the problem?

When the choke is on, the secondaries are locked-out.

But then, you shouldn't be so hard on the gas pedal as to engage the secondaries when the engine oil is still not up to normal operating temperature.

You deleted the hot air to the air cleaner?  Leads to carb icing at ~40 degrees and humid weather conditions.

Open-element filters are a poor solution; I suggest a filter housing that allows cold (ambient temperature) air inlet.  Sucking in heated under-hood air is no performance booster.

Agreed, I've leave the hot air tube in place, and make sure the exhaust crossover passage in the intake isn't partially plugged up either.  The intake crossover should get hot quickly, and help the engine run better in cold weather without waiting for it to "heat soak"......Cliff

I have ran several other cars with open element air
filter without this problem.  Thats why I dont think its just lacking
warm air during cold engine operation, once the engine is heat
soaked it runs great though. The choke is working correctly.
When i attempt to drive after 2min warm up it lacks power,
like there resistance in the engine, it doesn't want to go over 2000rpm's.
It does seem to be heat related, so how do i check the cross over?
Of course the intake on the Toro's are very hard to replace!
Its performing like its not completley burning the fuel,
tell its heat soaked. maybe i need more juice to the platinum plugs,
like a electric ignition upgrade.

Or just let it warm up for ten minutes and waste a
couple gallons of gas LOL!

By the way a 14 inch. open element flows over 700cfm while
the O.E.M. single snorkel flows around 500cfm max, (my carb is 750cfm rated)
free flowing air intake has made a notable difference. Want cold air buy a cowl hood they flow more cold air than a cold air intake, and dont get overtly dirty.
