rebuild recommendations
« on: February 01, 2013, 03:50:27 PM »
Need some advice........I have three quadrajets that I have collected over the years and would like to rebuild one of them for my latest hot rod.  It will be going on a 383 sbc with a mild cam and auto transmission.  Assuming I will have to completely go through any of these carbs, which will be they are in relatively good shape, which one will be the best candidate

7027157
17068272
7043202

Thanks for your help

I cleaned tyhe crud off of the carbs and have some better info.  The correct numbers are:

7043202   FS   1703
17058272   2717  BAU
7027157   1733

I have ordered Cliff's book but looking to get a head start on tearing one of these down.

THE LATER MODEL 17058282 WOULD BE MY CHOICE, AS LONG AS THE TRANS/THROTTLE LINKAGE WILL MATE. THE LATER CASTINGS ARE BETTER OVERALL, DON'T FORGET TO CHECK ALL GASKET SURFACES FOR STRAIGHTNESS. USING OR ADAPTING TO AN ELECTRIC CHOKE IS ALSO HELPFUL. JUST REMEMBER THAT ALL QUADRAJETS ARE EMMISSION CARBS AND WILL NEED IMPROVEMENTS ON A MODIFIED MOTOR TO RICHEN UP THE IDLE/TRANSFER CIRCUIT. ALL THIS INFORMATION IS IN THE BOOK AND CLIFFS REBUILD KITS ARE THE BEST. GOOD LUCK

The 17058272 would be my choice as well.

Are you sure it is 17058272? Or is it 17058282? The reason I ask, 17058272 is a Buick, Olds, and Pontiac carb. The 17058282 is a Chevy carb. Don't know if it would make a difference though.

I don't think it matters. If you were doing a stock Chevy and had the straight fuel inlet, it would be "alittle" difficult to route the fuel line. Since your not doing that, the BOP carb would be fine. That is the reason I asked. Let's see if Cliff would recommend that carb.

The later carb is going to be the best choice, because it will accept an electric choke.  It's going to need some help, being from a Pontiac 301 engine, but it is an excellent unit once correctly set-up for what you are doing.  The 73 Chevy second, and I would avoid the 67 carb all together.....Cliff

Get one of our kits, quick release choke pull-off, e-choke and tuning components.  Use the 2nd recipe for idle fuel delivery.

We also need to send solid secondary fuel nozzles and the long stop on the secondary airflap shafts needs shortened up per the instructions in our book.....Cliff
