Choosing between 17080205 or 17058229?H
« on: April 18, 2013, 02:19:44 PM »
Hello,

Looking for some advice on choosing between two carbs.  My friend is building a SB Chevy 400 for his next project (most likely a Camaro), and spent most of his dough on machine work and engine parts.  So I figured that I would do him a solid and donate one of my quadrajets to go on his factory aluminum manifold (another donation )  The motor is a '78 .030 400 from a chevy pickup, mild RV cam, stock replacement pistons.  He plans on running headers, auto trans and around a 3.08-3.42 rear with probably a mild stall converter.  (Can't get too specific yet, he is still looking for the car).  I rebuilt my quadrajet using Cliff's methods with outstanding results, so he is motivated to have  a quadrajet.  Question is which one of those carbs would be a better starting point.  The 17080205 is an APT carb off early 80's chevy truck, the 17058229 is a divorced choke model off '78 truck.  The 17058229 is the most complete as someone has destroyed the primary throttle shaft on the other carb looks like they tried to pound out the shaft without removing the screws! So I would have to scrounge a throttle shaft for him.  Sorry, this is so long, thanks in advance!

I have a 58229 that I use as a scrap carb. How bad is the throttle shaft? Is the linkage bent or is the throttle shaft actually broken?

I'd much rather work with the 80205, as it's an APT carb with integral choke. Divorced choke will be a pain, and no APT is not the end of the world but would be a dealbreaker for one of my personal vehicles.

The throttle shaft is slightly bent, which I think I can straighten out.  The biggest problem is whoever tried to pull it apart broke all of the throttle butterfly screws but one, and drove it out with parts of the the staked end of the screws not fully ground off, so it probably scored the throttle plate itself pretty good.  I got it partially dissasembled but all the parts are there, just the damaged shaft/plate.  Any idea what other carb numbers might share the same throttle plate, or should I try to drill out the broken screws and tap up to the next size?

I should note, that I recieved the carburetor in this partially disassembled condition so I am only assuming that whoever it was drove it out, damaging the throttle plate.  I need to look at it closely.

Thank you

I would try to re-use the shaft. You may not have to drill and re-tap, but if you do you can go up to a 4-40 no problem.

I think I've heard that people have used 6-32s as well. 4-40 will be easier to stake though.

Well got lucky.  I was able to drill out the screws (amazingly straight).  Went ahead and tapped them out to 4-40.  Was able to straighten the shaft out and dress up the beaten end.  Worked like a champ!

Thanks

Unless you are going to use a factory intake set up for divorced choke, the later APT carb is going to be a better choice all the way around.....Cliff

I agree with Cliff. The later one would be the better choice.
