which qjet?
« on: October 23, 2013, 06:28:08 PM »
I have a stock 56 chev. 283 eng. with a 17059206 quad on it, and I have drilled and plugged the bottom plugs with the epoxy that is recommended on this site, but the plugs still leak, so I must have screwed it up. I would like to get a carb built by Cliff but I cannot wait a year. Are there any other good options out there? All I want is a good quad that gets me the best mileage I can get on my daily driver. I can overhaul myself if necessary, but I don't want to screw up bottom plugs again. Any options, or what quad should I look for at the wrecking yard or wherever?  Thanks.

No drilling is required to replace the large bottom plugs.  The smaller lead front plugs are drilled out to remove them.  If you used Marine Tex it is important to mix it per the directions.  Adding to much hardener will not allow it to set-up and the plugs will leak.

As far as carb choice, any 1976 or later hot air or electric choke unit would be a good choice.  I'd look for a side inlet (Chevy) carb.....Cliff
