So I am about to purchase a Continental Torque Converter for my 70 LeMans Sport with 455 30 over, crower 60919, 3.55:1 12 bolt posi, 700r4, 27" tall tire Cobra 295/50/15's, that I DRIVE daily. Yet even after speaking to tech support, I am hesitant on which direction to go. Peter at CTC recommends going with the Jim Hand Special formula which flashes at around 3000 rpm. He recommends I go with a NON lockup converter and make the required mods to the tranny - a check ball removal and a TCC valve change. Also I believe he's recommending the 10" version.
So here are the questions:
1) I was under the impression that with my Heavy Car, a 13" would be better. True or False?
2) Even if I go non-lockup, isn't 3000 - 3200 stall too high for highway driving at 2300 rpm's? Won't it slip and HEAT UP too much?
3) Why would I want to go non-lockup? Because of the headaches involved in lockup cycling? Is it really that hard to get right?
4) What's the difference in rpm's between locked up and not locked up at say 70mph? Not significant?
