7041208 fast idle cam
« on: May 29, 2014, 03:35:37 PM »
This looks like a great forum, here's my first post. I just picked up a 7041208, dated 1601, for a very cheap price. Owner said it ran fine, & it looks clean. My problem is with the fast idle cam(plastic), the choke pull off, & the bracketry involved. It doesn't look correct to me, as I've never had a carb of that era with a plastic cam, - in fact I've never had any Quadrajet with one. I'm attaching a pic, with hopes someone can tell me what this setup is off of, & maybe someone can post a pic of what it should have. Thanks in advance, - Dale.

 Welcome to CHP!

Choke Pull-Off, Bracket and Link are correct. Looks like someone put the choke pull-off link in from the back, instead of putting it through the front. I would also definitely get a new steel fast idle cam from Cliff. Looks like yours is in bad shape. The thing that is throwing me off is the linkage on the very front of your photo? Doesn't look correct to me. I would look on eBay, as there is probably some carbs that you can compare it to. Cliff will know if it is correct. Doesn't look like it to me.

Looked on Ebay, nothing that looked like mine. A lot of them were complete junk, missing & broken parts etc. Would be nice to see an original, even a pic. I'll just have to research more. - Dale

Don't know what you're talking about? :o They all are the same as your's and are complete.

Didn't look at the choke pull-off right. Here is a photo of the correct choke pull-off:

Still not sure about the "lever's" in my second post.

I looked at some other qjets of approx the same vintage heres what I came up with.
in ref to Ethans picture with the 2 yellow arrows.

The arrow on the left, that arm on the linkage looks right, that arm prevents secondary air flaps from opening with choke on.

The arrow on the right. to me it looks af the arm has been modified. the end of the arm should be straight (horizontal) not bent up 90 deg. that arm is supposed to go thru the plate and under the plastic cam. So when the thermo coil is pulling down (cold) the plastic cam goes onto different idle speed steps and the arm on the left blocks the linkage to the secondary air flaps from opening.

I hope I'm right on this, its late in the night, and I'm no expert by any means. Just trying to help.

Time to check in on this. My thoughts are that the throttle plate & bowl are correct for '71, but the entire bracket/fast idle/choke pull-off are from some other carb(it does all work correctly though). Also the air horn(#7037307) has an external vent valve, which I don't think would be present on a 1971 Quadrajet, or could it be? I'm thinking that this carb was thrown together with spare parts. - Dale

Finally got around to looking at this carb again. The external idle vent valve question still hasn't been resolved. Can anyone confirm if a mid '71 carb would have an air horn with one or not? I always thought that 1970 was the last year, but ????? Thanks, Dale.

I believe you are correct. I think the air horn had been replaced some time in its life.

Also, I think it lasted from '67-'70 in BOP. Not sure in Chevrolets. ;)

From what I can see the carb has all the wrong choke parts on the side for that year, they are pre-1970.  The truck carb doesn't have a vent in the airhorn that year that I know of.

The carb may have been commercially "remanufactured" at some point, which would explain the problems with it.....Cliff
