I'm sorry if this is a double post.

I recently bought a 17059547.  It is an 800 cfm and reminds me of those I have seen oe on 301's, with small rod/jet combos.  The 301 QJ's have oe 52 rods with 72 primary jets.  This one has 67 jets with 45P rods. It is going on a small ci engine, a ford inline, so I would like a starting point combo.

One major difference between the 301 carb and this one is that the air bleeds in the air horn are very small, where those in the 301 are much larger.  Also, the bleeds beside the booster have restrictions in them.  I'll have to buy some micro bits so I can measure the bleeds and pass along the info.

I welcome any knowledge about what engine this came on oe, and about recommended jet/rod combos.

This is the expert forum, so I thought I may get lucky and find someone to identify this carb's oem engine. 

I was hoping to determine which Buick engine this may of been designed for, since in 79 Buick was using four engines: two small v6's, one turbo'ed, an olds 307, and a 350.  Because of the jet/rod combo (if it is original), and because of the similarity to the jet/rod combo of the QJ on a 301, I'm guessing it was on a v6.  I am, however, perplexed by the small air bleeds in the airhorn and beside the boosters. 

I don't know how turbo would effect the set up of a QJ, or whether this is one of those carbs.  Thank you all.

 Carb 17059547 is a M4ME carb. It came off the 1979 Buick Century and Regal, 6cyl-231cid (3.8L), Turbocharged, 4BC, California. Stock specs of that carb were: .067" Primary Jets, 45P Primary Metering Rods, "K" Secondary Hanger and CP Secondary Metering Rods.

Thank you, Ethan.  Something tells me you have reference book.  Since I'm going to be installing this on a Ford 300 with 250 hp, in a truck, should I set it up original and go from there? or would you use a richer combo on jet and rod?

 Do you have Cliff's book? Also, I would contact Cliff and see what he says. He will need all the specs of your truck as well. ;)

I wonder if anyone could please explain the primary enrichment tubes, what they do and how they do it?

Also, does anyone know the aprox. cfm of the primary side of an 800 QJ?

The small main air bleeds allowed the use of relatively small 67 jets. I would leave the air bleeds alone and maybe go up one or two jet sizes with your 45P rods. Then you should have some idea where your calibration is by driving it. I would "lock" out the secondaries so you can focus just on the primaries.

I don't think anybody on here can tell you exactly what jet/rod/air bleed combination you're going to need with your Ford 300. In the world of carburetor tuning, there's almost always some trial-n-error involved.

I found the info I needed.  I had to go back and read a bit in Cliff's book.  The primary enrichment tubes, it seems, act as an accelerator pump so the engine does not go lean the instant the secondaries are opening.


INTERESTING INFO:  I dug around on the web and found flow test results for the primary side of some pontiac QJ's. 

Primary cfm for a 750 QJ, varying slightly from model to model, is ABOUT 180 CFM.

PRIMARY SIDE CFM for an 800 cfm QJ is about 210 cfm.

Thanks.  I know this carb is set up for a 231 turbo in a regal.  Since mine is for a truck, pushing more weight, with a larger engine, I know I'll have to go up a bit with the jets or down with rods.  We'll see. thx k

When you decode a serial number how do you further define what engine the QJ came on.  For example, the serial # on my carb tells me it was on a Buick.  Is there a source that tells you which model Buick that carb was on?  Does anyone know?
