Carb floods and shuts off car after WOT
« on: April 22, 2015, 09:38:38 AM »
1978 Trans Am with Pontiac 400 pretty stock other than eddy aluminum intake. Purchased a rebuilt carb. from vendor "B" about a year and a half ago.

Car runs fine at normal throttle and idle but if I jump on it the engine stalls and the carb floods. I have to foot to the floor to get it to start back and then paddle until all the black crap has been blown out the exhaust. Within a minute or two of high idle it will go back to normal and drive fine as long as I don't romp on it again.

It could of been doing this the whole year and a half I just don't romp on it much.

Any suggestions of the culprit? Float needs adjusted? Timing off somehow?

I appreciate any help or advice.

float or needle/seat are getting stuck, take the top of the carb off and see if you can tell why it's getting hung up, I would replace the float and needle and seat while it's apart

Check the little clip on the needle is not in one of the holes of the float arm.

I'd find out why it's on "high idle" after the WOT scenario?

Choke coming back in for some reason?  Secondary throttle plates stuck open (common problem associated with your symptoms), linkage binding or hanging up on the lock-out?......Cliff
