excessive cranking after sitting a few days
« on: June 13, 2015, 12:50:01 AM »
Greetings! Once again, I come to dip my cup in the the well of  Q-Jet knowledge!

I'm having a issue with starting my Olds after its been sitting a few days. If I drive the car daily, it starts at the first twist of the key.Hot restarts arent an issue. After sitting a few days, it takes an excessive amount of cranking before starting.when it does start, there is no black smoke (as if it was flooded)  If I fill the float bowl with fuel thru the vent, it starts and runs immediately. I have verified the needle/seat are not leaking (as per the procedure outlined in cliffs book) I have epoxies the well plugs on the bottom of the main body. Im using a RobbMc 1100 fuel pump with a regulator (set at 5.5) and a fuel return line. It's a Edelbrock 1910 carb, with several of Cliffs parts. I'm reasonably sure the carb isnt leaking into the manifold, like i stated earlier the well plugs are epoxied with no improvement. I'm leaning towards evaporation, after a long drive in hot weather the garage stinks of fuel, with no visible leaks. I don't recall if this carb has a windowed seat for the needle/seat. I'm thinking if the fuel is evoporating, when the float drops, if the seat is windowed could fuel leak back into the fuel line and drain into the pump? I have always used Marathon 93 octane fuel, can anyone in readerland suggest a better fuel, perhaps with less ethanol? Is there anything I have overlooked? Sugestions?

It's a fact of life with Q jets and today's fuels. All the Q jets I've rebuilt/recalibrated (several dozen) for myself and others have done it. If the fuel level in the float bowl gets down below what's necessary to get fuel to the accelerator pump (about half full) you get no pump shot. Most Q jet cars won't start cold without a slight pump shot. it only takes 2-3 days for enough of today's gas to evaporate enough to get down to that level.

That's kinda what I figured. I might try some different brands of fuels, maybe some will work better than others. Thanks for the assistance.

am new to the chat forum and had a question to ask some one . I bought cliffs book and rebuilt a quad carb . but the thing still will not ajust by the ajustments  . I can all the  way in or out with no change , is this caused by the air not getting to the ajustments  or is the carb sucking air some where in the carb where they match together ? I cleaned the carb 2 times still no luck getting it to ajust .  hope sone one can help on this , thanks
