wet airhorn gasket
« on: October 04, 2015, 08:03:29 AM »
Just got my 7028210 (1968 Chevelle 396 325hp totally stock)  back on the road and thanks to this forum it is running very well. I did swap out the air horn gasket a few days ago as it was wet with fuel on the accel pump side. And found the void on that side COMPLETELY full of fuel. The other side just a touch. The problem still exists!?!  I will pull the top off again and check for warping. But is that all I should look for? Or might something else be going on?

Thank you!

 Welcome to CHP!

Warping, junk in needle and seat, too high float height, etc. is what I would check first.

Our rebuild kits come with a thicker top gasket for those early carburetors.  It is usually enough to correct minor miss-fitting between the main casting and airhorn without any machining or unwarping, etc.....Cliff

Cliff I did shave the front corners down a bit with a fine draw file. And although the gasket still comes up wet when its pinched. It is a huge difference from before! The air horn will be removed again for more adjustment, but now my concern is just how far can I go shaving down the front corners?  Is it possible to throw the accelerator pump plunger off center or mess up the hot idle vent? Is there a recommended maximum warping allowable?

I usually flatten the airhorn and use a thicker gasket and those will seal up fine.  We have .015" and .030" thicker gaskets to help things out in that area.....Cliff
