Removing the q-jet choke housing.
« on: December 21, 2015, 12:18:22 PM »
Quite a while back I remember an article in a hot rod magazine. They were flow bench testing some Holley carbs. For one test they milled off the choke housing of a double pumper and retested the carb. The result was zero increase in the cfm flow. I don't think I would ever do it, but I was wondering if this has ever been attempted on a q-jet. Looking
over a top plate, removing the choke housing would open up the blocked corners over the primary bores. This, in theory
at least, should bump up the air flow. Has anyone ever tried this modification?

Never tried it here, and wouldn't.  The primary side of the carburetor is designed for part throttle operation and efficiency for "normal" driving.  Even the smallest q-jets have plenty of cfm for most engine builds.

I have removed the booster rings on the primary side for big CID/high HP applications, but you will loose the efficiency on lower HP set-ups, so we reserve that modification for "max-effort" builds.....Cliff
