Recommendations for mildly built '68 BBC

Hi all-

Great forum here! Looking for some advice on setting up a Q-Jet for a new / old truck I just bought.

The truck is a '68 GMC 3/4 ton with a mildly built 396 and a TH400 trans. I do plan on doing some towing with it here and there. It clearly needs some carb / ignition tuning. Idles rough, surges, diesels a bit, etc. It also doesn't have an A/C solenoid, and seems to be tuned with a really high idle to compensate. It currently has the original Q-Jet manifold and a 17059286 carb. As it turns out I also have an Edelbrock 1904 with the electric choke and A/C solenoid sitting on the shelf - it looks pretty clean, but I've never used it.

The engine is the original 396 and has a fresh rebuild, with a few mild upgrades to help it breathe a bit:

- .030 oversize forged pistons, 9:1-ish compression
- Hooker long tube headers
- Basic head porting
- Lunati "High Efficiency" RV type cam - http://www.lunatipower.com/Product.aspx?id=2908&gid=258
- Magnaflow dual exhaust

My current thinking is to set up the 1904 with the right metering rods / jets / etc. and swap that on when it's ready. I'm in Denver, so most of my driving will be in the 5000-8000+ elevation range.

I'm planning to order the Q-Jet book and probably a rebuild kit. Any suggestions for jets / metering rods / etc that will work well for my application would be helpful too.

The 1904 would be an excellent choice for what you are doing.  If the intake has the exhaust crossover channel it will need to be blocked at both ends to keep the heat off the carb and get a good seal.  We can discuss that modification and tuning when you call for the kit and book, saves a lot of typing.....Cliff
