'86 CCC Quadrajet High Dwell
« on: December 10, 2016, 12:30:24 PM »
Hey all!
I've been trying to fix this problem for a long time now, here goes!
I've got a rebuilt Qjet on my '86 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham. It has an olds 307 in it by the way.
I'm having an issue where at highway speeds i'll feel a slight surge in speed, sometimes worse than others, and if i start the car when it's warm enough to not use the choke, the car feels like it's about to die.
Now I hooked up my dwell meter to take a look at what the MCS is doing and I'm stumped! It's completely stuck at about 45degrees and no matter any adjustment I can't make it move. When I give it some gas however it'll fly over to about 5 degrees and stay there no matter how much gas i give it(The car is all warmed up too). Now! When I start it when its already warm the dwell reads about 60 degrees and it feels like its about to die out, very shakey too.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what my problem is? Could my o2 sensor be completely caked in carbon and not give me a proper reading?
The car has right around 155k kms on it (I think thats about 95,000 miles)
Any help at all would be greatly appreciated!!

When you say the carburetor is "rebuilt", is it the original unit, or purchased from a parts store?.....Cliff

Sadly it's a completely "new" unit, my original one had damage to the casting itself so it needed to be replaced.

Didn't know they made "new" ones, only commercially "remanufactured"......Cliff

That's why I put new in quotes, its new to the car, its a rebuild by guaranteed carburetors.

That is what I suspected, and that is what the problem is.

I haven't seen a single good working sample from any of the commercial sources in decades, and the CCC carbs are usually the worst.

The really bad news is that it is difficult if not near impossible for use to help with those, as it could (and probably does) have a multitude of issues and problems related to assembly, low quality internals, and lack of attention to detail.......Cliff

PS: did you keep the original "damaged" unit, and what was damaged on it?

The original unit was sent to them as a core exchange, it had a massive air leak from a big U shaped dent in the side wall where the airhorn meets the bottom casting.
What can I do to fix the problem?

There's someone parting out an '87 Caddy like mine, same engine. Do you think it would be a good idea to ask him if he'll sell me the carb?? **ALSO I forgot to mention that sometimes the check engine light comes on for the o2 sensor when I'm driving at around 60-80Km/h(35-50mph) for more than a few seconds, when I speed up to highway speed it'll go away.... It's code 13 which I thought was pretty odd

The best repair will be to obtain an original unmolested core and completely/correctly rebuild it, so good idea to get that one if you can......Cliff
