Idle pickup tube collar size difference?
« on: October 08, 2017, 05:45:40 AM »
I am working on a 7029224, and am trying to replace the idle pickup tubes, but the new ones seem too small. Is my receiver too large, or did I get an odd pair?  I marred the old ones, so I am unable to reuse threm.

Was that carburetor commercially "remanufactured" at some point?....

Yes it was, however, the person I purchased them from chose to treat me like a complete moron, so I drove 4 hours to get another core. I immediately took the tubes out, and my new tubes slipped right in the hole with no resistance just like my original.

I guess at this point I just need to buy another pair from someone else.  I was able to surgically remove the collars from the "new" core, but the tubes won't fit inside of them

The only time I've ran into loose idle tubes is with commercially remanufactured units.  I have had some that didn't take much effort to install but never just dropped right in w/o some resistance.

I'll size what we have in stock when I get to the shop tomorrow and see if we have bigger than .160"?.....Cliff

I would appreciate it. I have seen them listed online with a collar OD of .161.

I measured everything in my possession and all of them are .160" to .1603".  Nothing at .161".

I also tried to insert several of the .160" into fresh rebuilds here and there is some interference fit so they just don't drop right in.

When we run into loose idle tubes here, which isn't very often I usually just coat them with a little red Loctite and may use a round nose punch next to the hole they go into and very gently reduce the size of the opening so they go in with a little resistance.  Not really a big deal as long as they seal up and pull the fuel thru the orifice in the end of the tube......Cliff

A few years ago I got one from another supplier that dropped right in with no resistance. I don't remember what it measured but the sleeve was smaller in OD than normal. A replacement fit correctly, so the carb was OK and I'm guessing it's possible for a defective idle tube to slip through occasionally.
