Ruggles Rebuilt Running Rich In Start Up
« on: May 09, 2018, 09:12:36 AM »
Cliff and others.  My quadrajet is running very rich on startup.  It is also taking a little longer than I think it should go come off high idle.
Any suggestions for tweaking?  Carb has your electric choke conversion too.
Thanks.

Ah ... did you try adjusting the choke?

Yes, I set it leaner but did not notice a difference.  It runs and idles great once it kicks down.
Suggestions?
Thanks.

Adjust the pulloff so it opens the choke a bit more at startup.

adjusting it "leaner" does not lean it out.  It reduces the "time" the choke stays on.  77 cruiser has the plan.

O.K.  Thanks for the suggestions/explanations.  Can either of you describe how I properly adjust the choke pulloff?
Thanks again!

Correct on the choke having nothing to do with running rich right at start-up.  The pull-off controls the angle the choke flap is opened to.  They are all adjustable, early models may require bending parts, later models turning a Phillips head screw.......Cliff

Did some of the rear pulloffs have a screw to adjust?

There is an adjustment screw on the front pull-off so that one is very easy to adjust.

Some rear pull-offs also have an adjustment screw if they are the double acting variety and control both functions.  You still may find yourself bending the linkage on them as they also control the secondary air door.....Cliff

Thanks Cliff.  Can you explain how exactly it gets adjusted?  Not sure which way it gets turned and what result I should be looking for.
Thanks.
Steve

Turning the P/O adjustment screw clockwise will richen it up (not open as far), CCW will lean it up as it will open further.

It needs to be adjusted on a cold start-up, and you can fine tune the fast idle speed screw as well for your liking.  The speed screw is on the end of the throttle shaft under the choke housing......Cliff

Still having an issue with rich starts and getting the high idle to kick down.  This carb has two pulloffs, front and rear.  Should the rear pull off be hooked to vacuum too?  I was told to just cap off the rear pull off.  Is this correct?
Thanks again for your help.
