Quadrajet 17082403 Marine carb
« on: August 22, 2018, 12:02:42 PM »
Cliff....I got a major problem with my boat. I went on a trip and covered approx 60 miles. I burned 180 gals of fuel. Trouble is motors are running great. Have two 454 crusaders rated at 350 horsepower. I'm thinking maybe it's time to replace the main Jets and primary rods and possibly the secondarie set also. Boat seems to be running rich as we can smell the exhaust pretty good. I rebuilt these carbs about 4 years ago with your kits and I could make two trips to the islands with this amount of fuel but not now. Can you recommend the proper primary secondary Jets and rods for this carb? Going to do a compression check this weekend and if all is good I'm going after there carbs again.

Jets, metering rods and power piston springs do wear out, and when the jets get "egged" out some and rods worn down higher fuel consumption is the result.

I wouldn't be in a bug hurry to recalibrate to smaller jets/rods, and for sure "rod" out the idle tubes because they get "varnished" up, plugged up and can negatively effect fuel consumption.

Marine set-ups are far worse than automotive because of the "wet" environment, stale fuel, drying up cycles, and long periods on not using them.

When you get time give me a call at the shop, I'll spec out some new tuning parts and a new top gasket for the install....tks.....Cliff
