Idle stinks - screws turned in to seat
« on: March 05, 2022, 07:38:28 PM »
I have a 327 Chevy engine in my 4wd 88 Silverado
I ended up putting a Q-Jet and a 327 in it which is built close to factory specs with the exception of shorty headers and a performer intake with a Q-Jet that has #s matching a '68 truck.
The block is zero decked and the crank is balanced and it has a Melling cam with 204deg intake @ .050 and 214 exh @ .050.
So it's mildly built - I calculated the CR and it's about 8.5:1.
Anyhow - The fuel consumption is acceptable @ about 15 mpg combined hwy/city driving, but mostly hwy.
It's not octane sensitive and it performs a little better than I expected it to when I floor it, and drivability is good.
But when it idles it stinks and burns my eyes.
The carb is one that I picked up from a friend's box of parts, so possibly he put the incorrect idle screws into it, because the idle screws are closed, but I'm guesssing it's rich.
I tried removing the springs just to be sure the screws weren't bottoming out on the springs.
What should I do?
I don't have any exh gas analyzer.
I also have an MSD dialthat allows me to adjust the ignition timing from in the cab
The engine has 8000 mi since the rebuild.
I did use a vaccum ga for tuning but I am thinking that with the idle mix screws being turned all the way to the seat and it still smelling rich, that is limiting what I can accomplish.

Thanks

Take  flashlight and look into the carb at idle.  Look past the choke flap and see if there is any fuel dripping from the boosters......

No trickling from the booster

Could it be the APT screw or wrong size primary rod ?

Still haven't ruled out incorrect idle adjustment screws eithie.

The mixture is rich rnough that it will start and run on a 40 deg morning without using the choke except for about the first 30 seconds.

Thanks for the help

If the mixture screws are seated and no nozzle drip it's getting plenty of idle fuel from the exposed transfer slots.

May just need some idle bypass air, but without knowing the carb number or how it is set up that's just a guess on my part.....

I'll try to get that info and attempt to get pointed in the right direction on this soon.
