1969 Pontiac 7029268WF carburetor questions

I recently bought a 1969 Firebird that came with the dreaded "reman" Quadrajet, I just rebuilt it using "ballpark" jets and rods (75 jet, 45L rod, DB secondary with a K hanger) since I don't actually have new parts in hand.

Luckily this one seemed pretty clean and ran okay other than being rather lean from what I could tell. It runs much better and seems fairly close for a hack job of a rebuild. I bought a second one to experiment with and rebuild properly, but the shafts in the base plate are completely frozen.

I have a few questions for anyone still out there with experience on this carburetor:

- Are these worth rebuilding and modifying?
- Are there any other interchangeable base plates for this particular carb?
- Can newer style Quadrajet linkage be converted or replaced to work with the small eylet style cable linkage in the 1969 Firebird?

Difficult questions as being "remanufactured" throws a huge monkey wrench right into the middle of what you are trying to do.

An original 7029268 unmolested and still in good shape would be an excellent starting point for a really nice end result.

However, remanufactured carburetors are "hacked", modified, missmatched components and difficult if not near impossible to get to work correctly in many cases.

The companies that build them have a BAD habit of making modifications to them that are difficult to reverse and not for the better.  The miss-matching of components also makes things not work out well.

Sorry for the big black cloud over the project, but here I avoid anything remanufactured like the plague.......

It is in fact completely impossible to give an opinion about a carburetor that has been "remanufactured" without having seen it and checked ALL the parts it is assembled from and what has been done with the calibration.

Understood, I think I am going to stick with this carburetor for the 1969 Firebird. I have 2 of them and will compare/log the specs on each and report back when I have those. Once I have the tools to get those measurements it will be much easier to determine what if anything was modified.

Eyeballing the two they seem fairly identical and the jets were the same. Airhorn, body, and base are all correct on both. I just need to see if I can fix the baseplate for my spare or find an alternate that will work. My plan is to build one for 93 octane, and the other for E85. I have 2 17057274 QJ as well , but the linkage and vents are different enough I'll use them on my 1981 with a 400 instead.
