Secondary hanger and rods?

(1/2) > >>

Jeff K:
I have a 1978 Chevy 454 truck motor. It has 8.25 compression it it all stock but runs very strong. This is in a 69 el Camino with a th400 and 2.73 standard cog 10 bolt. This is a street car only and I am very happy with the power it gives.

I recently changed cams to the Melling 22216 marine cam with new GM lifters with the split base.

I am thrilled with the additional performance of this cam, along with its cool, low key, lope at idle..

My brother gave me three Quadrajets, he is cleaning out one of his storage spots. God only knows what he has stashed away. One of the carbs has a straight in fuel filter and the other two have 90 degree inlets. He says one style is for Pontiacs and hard to get..

I have three hangers and four sets of rods.
2- L hangers.
1- J hanger.

2 sets of CK rods #7045779 S-tip.
1 set of DP rods  #0686 S tip.
What would be the best hanger and set of rods to use. Or do I have to do experiment..

The carb I have on the engine is stock and came with the engine.

My car likes the air and fuel mixture set at 3 and 3/4s turns for the best idle to off idle performance. This makes a very big difference in off idle performance. Its real strong off idle all the way to 5500...

Cliff, thank you so much for the cam recommendation!!!

Cliff Ruggles:
What carburetor is on it now?  What secondary metering rods?

Jeff K:
Thanks Cliff, but I found the info in your book of all places LOL..

Jeff K:
Turns out I didn't have the right parts.

-The engine is a stock 1978 Chevrolet 454 truck motor. 8.20 compression, no emmisions, the only modification is the 22216 Melling cam.

-Th-400 2.73.

The Quadrajet carb looks like its the one that came with the 1978 454 truck engine.

-Right now Im using a L hanger with DH rods.

 I have the following extra parts;

- I, J and L hangers.

- 2 sets of CH rods and one set of DP rods..

Its running pretty good and has strong power in all ranges. I just wanted to make sure I'm using the best parts for the rest of the season.

This winter, I'm going to completely go over it with one of your kits. I think it might need a small brass float.

I can get some better pictures once my camera charges.

The carb numbers on the left side are 17058212 then under that is 1218 BJA..

I'm using the L hanger with the DH rods that are suppose to be short tip.

I also have a set of CH and DP rods along with a J and I hangers..
